What is the Alexander Technique?When the bodys natural co-ordination is interfered with gravity literally pulls us down. The Alexander Technique is a way of enabling our natural co-ordination to work in the best possible way. When this happens we can stay upright with very little effort. Specific symptoms tend to disappear in the process. Deep patterns of tension become unlocked bringing about freedom of movement and the ability to to organise ourselves well in whatever we do. |
||
Who can benefit?Anyone of any age can benefit from Alexander Technique lessons for many reasons including stress-related problems, general fatigue, breathing disorders, neck and shoulder tension or back pain, RSI and recovery from injuries. Sports players and the health-conscious use the Technique to improve co-ordination, performance, and well-being. Singers, dancers, actors, and musicians experience the Technique as an essential part of their training. |

Who was Alexander?Frederick Matthias
Alexander was born in Tasmania in 1869. He became an actor but developed
voice and breathing problems. Through self-observation he discovered
that the relationship of the head and neck to the back was a crucial
factor in all activity. By applying this principle he was able to change
his own use and in the process cure his own problems. What happens in lessons?The teacher uses his hands and verbal instruction to help the pupil explore simple everyday movements such as sitting in a chair, standing up and lying down. The Technique is usually taught on a one-to-one basis so that individual needs can be addressed. A lesson takes about 45 minutes and costs £20. Concessions are available. If 6 lessons are booked in advance, the 6th one is free. Even a few lessons can make a difference but for continuing self-improvement a course of 20-30 lessons is recommended. Group classes are also a good introduction to the Technique. |
