Baby Massage
Baby massage is a way of promoting loving
communication between you and your child, through positive physical
contact, bonding, and stimulation
of your child's development. The first few months after having a
baby can be a challenging time for parents. Baby massage can play a
vital
role in enriching the lives of both baby and parents by bringing
a sense of contentment and well-being. It also teaches important
qualities such as love, respect and caring.
Baby massage instruction can be given to babies and toddlers
up to 10 months old. Baby massage is easy and fun to learn with
simple
strokes that you will have used instinctively with your child,
as well as more conventional massage strokes, providing effective
ways of meeting
his or her needs, for example if they have colic or are teething.
All have great benefit, for example, enhancing development and
sensory
awareness,
aiding digestion, stimulating the immune system and promoting sleep
and relaxation. With older babies and toddlers greater emphasis
is
placed on active movements which your child participates in, and
simple rhymes and games. Massage for older babies has the same
benefits as those we have already mentioned, with additional emphasis
on encouraging muscular
co-ordination and joint flexibility.
Baby massage instruction can be given on a one to one basis, or
in small groups of other parents who may wish to have a joint
session, and there are reduced rates for this. Mum's, Dad's
Grandparents
or
other carers for your child are very welcome to come (space permitting!)
and to enjoy this very special time for you and your child.
I recommend 2 -3 sessions, during which we can check in on your progress,
discuss suitable creams/oils to use for massage and create a routine
that you really enjoy with your baby, adding new movements as you
become increasingly confident.
