About Osteopathy

Osteopathy uses many of the diagnostic procedures involved in a conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Its main strength lies in the unique way the patient is assessed holistically from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint.
Treatment is aimed at improving mobility and/or reducing inflammation by using gentle manual osteopathic techniques on joints, muscles and ligaments.

What kinds of problems can osteopathy help with

Although osteopathy is perhaps best known for the treatment of back pain, in actual fact it is effective in a wide range of conditions.

  • Low back pain (with or without sciatica)

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Headaches

  • Sports Injuries:

      • Knee pain, including: mal-tracking and degenerative conditions

      • Muscle and ligament injuries

      • Shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries

      • Foot and ankle complaints

      • Tennis and golfers elbow

      • Tenosynovitis

      • Tendonitis

  • Pain of arthritis

  • Hip pain and a general lack of mobility

  • Injury as a result of accidents

  • Postural problems caused by work (including computers) driving or pregnancy

  • Babies with colic can often be helped likewise children with glue ear

When I visit an osteopath what can I expect?

When you first consult an Osteopath a full medical history will be taken. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing so that the mobility of your body can be evaluated by performing a series of simple movements. In addition the Osteopath will then use a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation to identify any points of weakness, excessive strain or injury throughout the body. Lifestyle, work, sporting and leisure activities will also be taken into account.
After reaching a diagnosis the Osteopath will explain to you the treatment plan that is proposed.
After treatment, if appropriate you will be offered remedial advice and preventative exercise.

How does Osteopathy work?

Osteopaths work with their hands using a wide variety of treatment techniques. These include soft tissue technique, rhythmic passive joint mobilization or the high velocity thrust techniques designed to improve mobility and the range of movement of a joint. Gentle release techniques are widely used, particularly when treating children or elderly patients. This allows the body to return to efficient normal function.

Status of the profession

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) opened the statutory register of Osteopaths in 1998. All registered Osteopaths have had to demonstrate to the GOsC via a detailed application process that they are a safe and competent practitioner and have agreed to abide by the code of practice.
